Instructional activities (How does this game help develop language acquisition and development, both oral and written?)
In this game students need to kid help the Brainzy gang sort their books, each with a different short vowel word, in order to pack their backpacks for school. Kids compare words with the short o, short a, and short e sounds in this game, each with an image to give players support. This short vowel sort is the perfect way to help pre-readers become familiar with letter sounds.

Assessment:

Each time a student puts the right backpacks into the box, Brainzy Gang nods his head and sounds out the vowel sound. If the student puts it in the wrong backpack, Brainzy Gang shakes his head no.

Debriefing (refer to article pages 8-12)

When students finish the game, the teacher will ask questions that will help students identify factors attributing to the success or their failure when playing this game.

What cognitive skills does this game cultivate?

This vowel sort is great because it cultivates cognitive skills in the students by requiring them to become familiar with letter sounds by having them sort the a, o and e sounds.

What new literacies does this game cultivate (refer to the journal article pages 2-3)

This game cultivates new literacies since it uses technology in a fun and educational way. It teaches students to identify vowels in a 21st century manner.
